Waymo to launch driverless robotaxis in Singapore by 2028

Alphabet-owned Waymo is continuing its global expansion. As reported by The Verge, the autonomous driving technology developer has chosen Singapore as its next international destination, where it plans to launch a full robotaxi service by 2028.

According to official company representatives, the first test vehicles will arrive in Singapore in the coming months. This will mark the initial phase of preparation, paving the way for large-scale infrastructure work and technological testing.

Testing phases and safety

From 2027, Waymo will begin detailed digital mapping of Singapore's streets along with autonomous trials. The initial phase will prioritise safety standards, with a dedicated safety driver sitting behind the wheel of each test vehicle to monitor operations.

Only after successfully completing these stages does Waymo aim to achieve its ultimate goal: offering a fully autonomous driverless taxi service to the general public by 2028, with no human intervention required inside the vehicle.

Regulatory requirements

Before the company can start carrying passengers, it must obtain approval from Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA). Under Singapore's current regulations, all autonomous vehicles are required to undergo a special safety assessment procedure.

Waymo is actively expanding across international markets, and entering Singapore represents a key component of its global strategy.
