Incorrect advice from artificial intelligence chatbots has caused another real-world incident. According to TechCrunch, a group of hikers who relied on Google Gemini to plan their route and supplies required rescue assistance.

An official statement from the local sheriff's office identified a flawed recommendation from the AI assistant as the primary cause of the incident. Specifically, Google Gemini advised the hikers to take far less food and water than their group actually needed.

Artificial intelligence and safety risks

The incident highlights the dangers of using generative artificial intelligence (AI) models in areas where human safety and lives are at risk. Large language models (LLMs) frequently produce inaccurate or entirely false answers, a phenomenon known in the tech industry as "hallucination".

Thematic assistants and chatbots are increasingly used to plan trips and hikes. However, this case clearly demonstrates that AI algorithms lack real awareness of environmental conditions, group needs, or potential risks.

Tech experts remind users that they should not trust AI in critical situations, particularly when hiking in extreme conditions. Information regarding food, water, equipment, and routes should always be verified against official guides and experienced specialists.
