European Space Agency to Proceed with Venus Mission Independently
After NASA withdrew its support for the mission's radar, the ESA is taking full control of the project.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is continuing its Envision mission to study Venus as planned, despite shifts in its partnership with NASA. As reported by Ars Technica, the American agency could not provide the radar instrument required for the mission, leading European scientists to decide to develop the project independently.
What is the goal of Envision?
The primary objective of Envision is to create a detailed map of the Venusian surface. Because the planet is shrouded in thick clouds of sulphuric acid, optical cameras cannot penetrate the atmosphere. Consequently, the radar is the most critical component of the mission, designed to map the planet's topography through the cloud cover. Scientists hope that Envision will uncover evidence of active volcanism on Venus. The new mission will image the surface with a resolution 10 times higher than that achieved by NASA’s mission in the 1990s.
What has changed in the collaboration?
Under an agreement reached in 2024, NASA was set to provide a synthetic aperture radar and ensure communication via its Deep Space Network. In return, the ESA was to include American researchers in the mission's science team. However, after NASA declined to manufacture the radar, the European side has taken full responsibility for assembling the spacecraft and developing all necessary instrumentation. The mission will still launch on an ESA Ariane 6 rocket.
Despite these changes, European scientists state they are prepared to complete the project successfully. Researching Venus is vital not only for European science but for global astronomy, as it will provide new data regarding planetary evolution. For countries like Georgia that maintain close cooperation with the ESA, the success of such large-scale space missions is significant, as it opens new prospects for scientific collaboration.
