According to Engadget, defective pixels on modern displays—whether on smartphones, laptops, monitors, or televisions—are a relatively common problem. However, many users struggle to tell the difference between a dead pixel and a stuck pixel, despite the fundamental distinction between the two.
While both flaws may look similar at first glance, the publication notes that they are easy to identify once you know what to look for.
What is the difference between dead and stuck pixels
A dead pixel is a screen element that has completely failed and no longer receives electrical power. As a result, it permanently appears as a black dot, regardless of what image is currently displayed on the screen.
A stuck pixel, on the other hand, occurs when a pixel or one of its sub-pixels (red, green, or blue) remains locked in an active state. When this happens, a permanent coloured dot appears on the screen and refuses to change colour as the displayed content changes.
How to check the display
The easiest way to inspect a screen is to display solid white and solid black backgrounds. A bright, coloured dot visible against a black background indicates a stuck pixel, whereas a black dot appearing against a white background points to a dead pixel.
Why diagnosis matters
Knowing the difference between these two conditions carries practical benefits. A stuck pixel can sometimes be revived using software utilities or specialised colour-cycling animations. In the case of a dead pixel, the issue is physical hardware damage, making a fix virtually impossible without replacing the entire display panel.
For consumers purchasing new hardware or considering warranty support, correctly diagnosing the defect makes it much easier to assess retailer and manufacturer warranty coverage.
